Cartoon renaissance

Suddenly cartoons are funny again and I'm so glad I have a kid so I get to watch them without feeling guilty about wasting time.

I have often lamented that cartoons became so unfunny for so long. When I was a kid they were hilarious and violent and politically uncorrect and the animation was fabulous. I felt sorry for kids coming along later who were stuck with mostly crap with a bit of fun thrown in.

Today Mo was watching "Edgar and Ellen" and some swami or whatever was teaching this group a mantra:

"Ooooommmmmm mmmmmaaaaahhhhhh eeeeeeee ddiiiiiii uuuuuutttttt"

The swami kept telling them to say it faster and faster and I was laughing my head off and Mo totally didn't get it until I filled him in on mantras.

Yeah, baby, cartoons are back!

What are your favorite cartoon?

I used to like that one with the hamburger, milkshake and fries, and that one that resurrected Space Ghost as talk show host.

I honestly don't know Boomer. I used to come across it on Cartoon Network when channel surfing in Canberra late at night waiting for the fairies to drop sleepdust in my eyes. I did notice that even 'mainstream' cartoons were going for a streak of irony like Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Ed, Edd and Eddy etc. Although the DragonballZ type cartoons of Asian origin still seem mindless to me.

I grew up a cartoon junkie. But, I lost interest in TV cartoons some years back. I do hope you are right that they are better.

Incidentally, I spent time at my daughter's house, and these endless reams of Spongebob cartoons stayed on the TV at all hours of the day. Horrible.

Are the Smurfs still on? They tended to be simple tales of bold adventure. Not only that, they were blue, sky blue if I remember correctly.

I admit to a prepubescent cartoon addiction too. I couldn't drag myself out of bed during the week but on Saturday mornings me and my bro would be in front of the tv at 5.30 in the morning waiting for 6 hours of continuous cartoonies. Cool McCool, Top Cat, Rocket Robin Hood, Space Ghost, Astro Boy et bloody al. If only I'd used that time learning another language or piano.

I still like the Simpsons and Futurama. Not as enamoured with the various 'ripoffs' that the Simpsons spawned. Haven't been exposed to his spongeness. I used to love Duckman too. And that weird cartoon with a little dog and a big dog and the little dog is always going to conquer the world. Didn't see too many Ren & Stimpey's but that seemed OK.

Note to self: 'Get life'.

I haven't seen a cartoon in ages, but I remember my mother laughing at Rocky and Bullwinkle. I think I was in my 20's before I got a lot of their jokes and puns.

Oh where oh where is Blaise Daisy?

Some Spongebob is cool -- the old stuff, before it became too popular is cool. (We have an old Spongebob video game that is acid trip bizarre.)

The thing I love about Spongebob is that he loves his work. LOVES it. He's got this kind of crummy job and he puts his heart and soul into doing it well. He takes his job seriously. I really do love that about him. He's happy.

The big "LOST EPISODE" was hilarious!

Phineas and Ferb is a relatively new cartoon on Disney and it is hilariously genius. Every episode includes the two boys, Phineas and Ferb having some kind of ridiculous fun in which the sister, Candace tries to get them caught. Meanwhile, their pet, Perry the Platypus is a secret agent who saves the day. In the end, whatever Phineas and Ferb were doing is cleaned up, Perry returns to normal, and Candace ends up looking foolish. It's a great show.

Robot Chicken by Seth Green is hilariously as well. Of course, on a totally different level.

I haven't seen Phineas and Ferb. That sounds good. We mostly watch Nicktunes and old Tom and Jerry cartoons that are shown on On Demand.

Has anyone seen "The Secret Show"? I LOVE that one.

"El Tigre" is the coolest looking of the whole new batch of toons.
